Busta Rhymes Announces Dillagence 2 With J Dilla Production
Busta Rhymes is preparing Dillagence 2, a sequel built around J Dilla production. Here’s why the project matters for hip-hop.
Some collaborations just make sense.
Busta Rhymes confirmed earlier this year that he is preparing Dillagence 2, a new project built around production from the late J Dilla.
The project follows Busta and DJ Mick Boogie’s 2007 Dillagence mixtape, where Busta attacked a collection of Dilla beats alongside several guests. In February 2026, Busta held a New York listening session previewing the sequel. A release date and official tracklist still had not been announced at the time of the reveal.
That alone should have boom-bap fans paying attention.
Busta Rhymes Over Dilla Beats Is a Natural Combination
J Dilla's production could be soulful, dusty, off-center, smooth and ridiculously hard at the same time.
Busta Rhymes happens to be one of the most rhythmically creative rappers hip-hop has ever produced.
Put those two ideas together and you get something rappers spend their whole careers trying to manufacture naturally: unpredictability.
Busta doesn't simply rap on top of a beat. His voice becomes part of the percussion.
Dilla didn't simply make loops. His drums often moved in ways that forced rappers to approach the pocket differently.
That chemistry is why revisiting Dillagence nearly two decades later is more interesting than somebody simply attaching a legendary producer's name to a new release.
This Isn't Just Nostalgia
Hip-hop has reached an interesting point.
The genre now has enough history that artists can revisit classic ideas the same way rock, soul and jazz musicians have done for decades.
But there's a big difference between celebrating history and becoming trapped by it.
Dillagence 2 has an opportunity to do the former.
The original mixtape arrived in 2007. A sequel in 2026 shouldn't need to pretend those 19 years didn't happen. Busta has evolved. Hip-hop has evolved. The audience has evolved.
What hasn't changed is that great MCs over great production still works.
A Listening Session Has Already Happened
This isn't just Busta saying he might make something one day.
He previewed material from Dillagence 2 during a New York listening event in February. Reports from the event also noted that Statik Selektah and DJ Tony Touch were present, while a clip shared afterward appeared to preview another rapper over Dilla production.
Until there is an official tracklist, though, features should be treated as unconfirmed.
And that's probably the best approach.
Let the project speak when it's ready.
Hip-Hop Still Needs Records Like This
There's room for every version of rap.
Melodic records. Drill. Underground. West Coast. Southern trap. Experimental music. Radio records.
But there's also still an audience that wants to hear a veteran MC get handed incredible production and simply rap.
Busta Rhymes doing that over J Dilla's music has the potential to connect generations without sounding like a history lesson.
If Dillagence 2 delivers, it won't matter that the first installment came out almost twenty years ago.
Great beats and great rapping don't have an expiration date.
